What Is Schiffli Embroidery? How to Wear and Care for It

What is schiffli embroidery? Schiffli is a type of machine embroidery, named after the boat-shaped (Swiss-German “schiffli”) shuttle of the looms that stitch it. It creates dense floral motifs, eyelets and scalloped edges directly on fabric — usually cotton — giving a delicate, lace-like finish that is light and breathable.

Where schiffli comes from

Schiffli machines were developed in Switzerland in the 19th century to embroider long lengths of fabric at once. In India, schiffli cotton is widely loved for summer clothing because it adds texture and detail without adding weight — you may also hear eyelet-embroidered cotton called hakoba.

How to style schiffli

How to wash schiffli clothes

  1. Turn the garment inside out.
  2. Hand wash or use a gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent.
  3. Don’t wring — press water out gently so eyelets keep their shape.
  4. Dry in the shade; direct sun can fade coloured threads.
  5. Iron on the reverse on a medium setting, placing a cloth over the embroidery.

Frequently asked questions

Is schiffli fabric see-through?

Eyelets can be slightly sheer. Many schiffli pieces are lined or use embroidery on panels and hems — check the product description.

Is schiffli good for summer?

Yes. It’s usually embroidered on cotton, so it stays breathable, and the eyelets add airflow.
